Batman: Arkham City Review

12/28/2011 Tim Swoboda Comments (0)
Video game sequels can get a bit dull now-a-days, especially when developers start spewing them out as if they were rendered on a mechanical manufacturing line. Since we, as a gaming community, are exposed quite often to sequels that were "rushed out of the gate", we might beRead more » Posted in: Arkham City,Batman,Review

Roxio's GameCap HD PRO Edition Review

Earlier this week I went about conducting a review on the EasyCap DC60 USB video capture card. This review came out of the excitement of the end of an age, for me atleast. What I mean by the end of an "age", is that I will no longer be using that mediocre capture card for content in the future. A new age of content recording has begun. This new age involves me and my Roxio GameCap HD Pro Edition video capture card and let me tell you, this partnership is looking amazing.
Roxio's GameCap HD Pro is an intuitive piece of technology. The device, to my understanding, conducts all of the major video processing in the initial card, rather than requiring your computer to stress out. I can't tell you how many times I have struggled in the past with the DC60 not being able to stay on track with video input through the rendering process. I would loose frames constantly, the initial video would come out of the recording process in a "choppy" manner, and the audio would just not coincide with the proper frame. With the GameCap this problem is virtually non-existent. It's incredible!

Roxio Quality 720p
Another feature that comes equipped with the GameCap HD is a copy of it's own video recording and editing software. Let me tell you, recording your gameplays has never been so easier. All you need to do is plug in your device, using the USB adapter, open up the Recording software and hit a single button. The fact alone that it shipped with an actual useable software has sold me.
The Roxio GameCap HD Pro is truly a remarkable device, which promotes ease of use and high quality recordings. All in all, I highly recommend this capture card.

This week's releases

I'm excited about a few of this week's game releases, as (after a bit of a lull), the holiday game season starts in earnest.
You can get full lists of the games at places like GameSpot.com or Kotaku, but here are a few to watch:
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360, PC, PS3) -- The sequel to a mondo game is a mondo game of its own, and the biggest of the week -- if not the year. We play every Monday and Wednesday nights.

  • Phantasy Star Zero (NDS) -- As an RPG franchise, I really dig Phantasy Star, and Zero looks to rock the Nintendo DS. At around 20 hours of story / gameplay per character (and three characters), this game'll likely take up residence in my handheld, now that I'm finally wrapping up Chrono Trigger.

  • Dreamkiller (360) -- I'm unabashedly a Painkiller fan (on the PC). Dreamkiller looks to be a spiritual successor to that game (complete with eastern European dev team), with a creepy, supernatural hook (psychiatrist goes into crazy's heads, a la an FPS trope, and ... erm ... cures them). Works for me!

  • Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans (NDS) -- Dunno if this one will work. I still keep trying to finish Dragon Ball: Origins, but the freaking 10-minute, non-skippable intro pisses me off, so I play it rarely. Still, I'm a franchise fan.

  • Dragon Ball: Raging Blast (PS3, 360) -- I think DBZ: Burst Limit was really under-rated, and if you played this demo on XBL recently, you may agree that this frenetic 3D fighter might be the next Saiyan evolution. Or, you may not. But you're probably wrong.

  • Final Fantasy XI: Ultimate Collection (360, PC) -- Granted, on the PC it's the "Vana'diel Collection 2010" ('cause that'll get you the ladies), but whatever. It's the MMO version of the FF universe, and while it's been patchily received, this rendition will have the base game, all four expansions, and all three add-on scenarios -- all for less than twenty bucks.

  • Braid (PS3) -- If you missed this solid little indie title on XBLA, then PC, now's your chance on PSN. It's a fun, hearty little platformer that does a better job than some full-box titles. Sure, it might be a little over-rated. But genuinely good games are.

  • WorldShift (PC) -- Pretty sure this title, from Crytek-purchased Black Sea Studios, is actually powered by Gamebryo tech, since development was fairly far along before the acquisition. It's a good-looking RTS / RPG online / offline hybrid.

  • Rogue Trooper: Quartz Zone Massacre (Wii) -- OK, this one actually came out way earlier this year, but seeing it inadvertently included one someone's list for this week gives me an excuse to tout it again. I so liked this PS2/PC/original Xbox game, and gushed over it. Twice. Now, with my yearnings for a next-gen update, I kind of got my wish, as it's as it's polished and available for the now-gen Wii. No new content, per se, but if you missed it the first time, find an inexpensive copy. Go nuts.
That's it for this week. Next week, it's New Super Mario Bros. time!

Turtle Beach Ear Force P11 Unboxing and First Impressions

Cheap gaming headset with actual quality may be extremely hard to come by. A good rule of thumb, which goes without saying, is that forking out more for a product will ultimately increase the initial return and satisfaction of the product. However, when I came across the Ear Force P11 from the infamous gaming audio manufacturers known as Turtle Beach I wondered if my general assumptions were "outdated" or over-generalized. Well after a decent inspection of the P11 I soon discovered that some shortcuts were implemented in order to provide the product to the public at an amazing price of $59.99 in good old United States currency.

The Turtle Beach Ear Force P11 Unboxing
One of the very first things that I noticed about the headset that completely screamed "turn off" was the simple fact that it was tethered to a massive cable. This cable is required to be plugged in to your PS3, or PC in order to function (yes, it draws its power from your "gaming" console). Of course, this factor is mentioned from the get-go on the products packaging. However consumers, such as myself, might not tend to do thorough research before they invest their hard earned cash into new toys. This here was my dilema, which should be expected when factoring price into your purchasing decisions.

Another aspect to the P11 that I noticed was a seemingly flimsy "band" that holds the speakers together. I am not going to lie, I feel as if I have to be extremely careful when using this headset in order to keep it from breaking. The speakers feel like they could just break off at any point, however after putting my detective skills to work I found out that this was merely to increase flexibility and comfort.

I am positively sure that there are quite a few more things that I need to learn about this product before I conduct an accurate review. Until that time comes along, I am going to cut this post a bit short. After all, this post is entitled "first impressions."

The latest character for Injustice: Gods Among Us has been revealed, and it's no surprise to me at all that it's Deathstroke.

He looks absolutely awesome, very badass.  In truth, I'm expecting most if not all of the DC Universe characters from Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe to make an appearance.  Of course time will tell!

Top 3 Games of the Year, 2012

To contact us Click HERE

With 2012 ending today, it's time to post my top three games of the year!

As I mention every year, I'm not a professional reviewer and I don't get review copies of games, so I'm limited in considering only games that I've played through.  This means that certain triple A titles that don't interest me won't be on the list, and I'll also only list something that I've played through fully and reviewed.

This year I also spent a lot of time playing games released in 2011 as I've been rather busy and free time's been at a premium, so keep that in mind as you read the below.

3) Halo 4 (Xbox 360).  As 343 Industries first brand new game on any platform ever, they had a lot of expectations to live up to.  The Halo franchise is massive and synonymous with the Xbox platform itself, and that's a mighty high bar that they had to raise.  Thankfully, 343 Industries was up to the challenge.

The first true sequel to Halo 3, Halo 4 continues the story of John-117 and Cortana as they face a terrifying new threat in the wake of the end of the Human-Covenant War.  While 343 Industries generally plays things safe and doesn't mess too much with the franchise's long established formula, the gameplay mechanics and the way they tell their story is done in such a way where the game and franchise are now definitely theirs.

The Chief speaks more and shows genuine emotion in the face of this new threat to humanity and Cortana's degrading Rampancy.  Featuring a slower paced but more focused Campaign, the Single Player element feels more like classic Halo than many titles before it.  Infinity Multiplayer is a new take on the tried and true online carnage, incorporating actual story elements to the traditional matches we know and love, and introducing a new episodic Cooperative game mode: Spartan Ops.

Filled with a healthy mix of new and old, Halo 4 is a solid entry to the franchise and a great first step for 343 Industries.

2) Mortal Kombat (PlayStation Vita).  Some may call this double dipping, as I gave Mortal Kombat Game of the Year for 2011, however the PlayStation Vita version released this past Spring and like its console big brother, I've spent way too much time with it.

Featuring almost all the extensive content from the console versions, the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat also includes a 150 mission Bonus Challenge Tower as well as two new mini-games, Test Your Slice and Test Your Balance.  NetherRealm Studios also included several more Klassic Costumes not available on consoles, amongst a few other minor additions.

While the portable version isn't as graphically impressive as the console versions, it features a proper frame rate and plays exactly like its bigger brother, making it a great portable version and wonderful companion for those who love the game.  In truth, Mortal Kombat is the reason I got a PlayStation Vita and still stands as the game I've played the most on that platform, and thanks to being able to enjoy it during my lengthy commute, I've greatly improved my game with my primary characters (Mileena and Scorpion) and also really tackled learning Kitana, allowing her to become another main.

With the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat I continue to learn new things about the game and for me, it's been a solid reason to give Sony's new portable a go.

1) Mass Effect 3 (Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 3).  So many people jumped on the hate bandwagon with Mass Effect 3, and I feel this was truly done unfairly.  Featuring the end of your Commander Shepard's journey to stop the Reaper threat from destroying the galaxy, players can once again import their Shepard's from the previous game to continue their adventure and allow their choices to have an influence on the story.

What follows is a character driven, emotional ride throughout the galaxy where gamers see the Reapers' devastation first hand as they struggle to unit the galaxy against the common foe.  In addition to forming alliances players attempt to build their War Assets for the final assault to take Earth back, and the number of Assets you have will generate subtle to not so subtle changes to your Shepard's ending.

Not only is there an amazing in-depth Single Player game here, but for the first time the franchise features Multiplayer.  Tied into the Single Player experience, gamers take part in specialized N7 squads in a cooperative "Horde" style experience where players take on waves of enemies to achieve objectives and build their Galactic Readiness, a variable that affects the effectiveness of the War Assets Shepard is collecting in the Single Player game.

This all comes together to form an engaging and complete action RPG experience that's as story driven as it is intense.  Though many took great exception to the game's ending, I personally had no such qualms as I kept my experiences realistic.  At the end of the day, it's the journey that matters, and the Mass Effect franchise provided me with an exceptional experience from start to finish.  As such, BioWare's epic deserves the honour of my Game of the Year for 2012.

Video & Gallery: Size Comparison, Lumia 920 Vs. Everything Else

To contact us Click HERE

So I decided to compare my brand new beautiful red Lumia 920 vs. the rest of the phones I had lying around, just to convey a feel of the actual size of the device. First off the Lumia really isn't that big; it's weight problems are heavily exaggerated; we like to think it's big boned (and trust me this is the type of phone that will sucker punch you in the jaw if you call it fat). Overall I actually like the build of the 920, its weight is comforting as the feel in your pocket it "re-assuring"; I've seen people lose their iPhones and galaxys without noticing their pockets were a tad lighter. That surely won't be an issue with the 920.

Impromptu Lumia 920 Photoshoot

One things about the Lumia 920 that makes it even more special is the amazing design, and eye catching colors (especially if you were smart enough to get in red like me). And when you have a device like the Lumia 920 in red it will definitely steal the show hands down EVERY TIME.

Simplest example comes from earlier this week, a couple of my friends and I went out for sushi; which somehow turned into a Lumia 920 press photo-shoot; and I swear to you not all of these were staged (only the one on the phone/#2 was).

So what do you guys think? Should we be in Nokia's next billboard?

Psst.. check out the full size images on SkyDrive here: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=8377F11746755992&id=8377F11746755992%21509#cid=8377F11746755992&id=8377F11746755992%21509

(the one below is the only staged one, I promise.)

Installous Is No More, Hackulous Packs Their Bags and Say Farewell

To contact us Click HERE

In a move that honestly surprised me, Hackulous; the team behind the fan favorite sideloading app "Installous" have closed up shop and said their final good-byes. Attempting to run Installous on any iOS device will now yield the error:
"Outdated VersionInstallous will now terminate" Heading over to the Hackulous website; (hackulous.us) will shed some light on the matter, where you're greeted with a solemn and sad message:

Goodnight, sweet prince.

We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down. After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well-moderated, despite the devotion of our staff. We're incredibly thankful for the support we've had over the years and hope that new, greater communities blossom out of our absence.

With lots of love,
Hackulous Team
However all is not over for the casual jail breaker and self admitted app pirates out there, there remains a number of alternatives to installous that get the job done, some are better some are quite ugly; we'll leave it to you to decide, but a short list are:
  1. App VV
  2. App Cake
  3. V share
  4. iFunBox
But this is the end of an era... farewell hackulous.
