Great news for Xbox 360 owners in the UK as both Netflix and Amazon's Lovefilm have made it onto the Xbox, joined lastly by the BBC's excellent i-player. It has been a long time coming, let me tell you.
Out of the two on-demand streaming services Lovefilm is slightly cheaper per month if you go for the streaming only service as opposed to also being able to rent DVDs and receive them through the post. Sadly, whilst Lovefilm has a huge movie catalogue only a small fraction is actually available on the streaming service.
Out of the two, I do prefer Netflix but Lovefilm has the edge when it comes to content. I'm not convinced that either service offers enough new content to keep people hooked month on month and this is the problem really. If you are looking for classic movies, foreign movies or movies that didn't quite become the box office success that the movie studio had hoped for then Netflix is for you. If all this sounds good but you do appreciate a good box office smash that wasn't out in the cinema years ago then Lovefilm is probably the better option.
There are lots of deals to be had for both Netflix and Lovefilm. Shop around and you'll get at least a month free with Netflix and the chance of some cashback. There are more deals for Lovefilm than you can shake a stick at but it is possible to get £15 or £20 Amazon vouchers for joining.
Finally, the arrival of the Beeb's i-player is great news and it works great. i-Player has been around on the Wii for ages, and on the PS3. Sadly the Wii version seemed to become next to useless - impossible to stream anything. Now i-Player is on the 360 I can finally consign the Wii to the retro gaming cupboard!
